76 - Haropa Port has chosen AKS, a new sugar factory
The AKS company, which came from Dubai and specializes in sugar, was selected by Haropa Port to set up in the Grand-Couronne-Moulineaux area, near Rouen. On this 75 ha site, the project will concern the construction of a factory for the production of white sugar from sugar beets; it will be one of the largest units of this type in operation on the European continent. The production of the future plant will be between 650 and 850,000 t annually. The planned investment is estimated at several hundred million euros. The industrial process incorporates the construction of a biomass boiler, fueled with wood waste to produce 30 MW/h of electricity. The unit will operate year round and AKS will purchase electricity from the selected supplier during the production season. The by-products from the sugar process will also be recycled thanks to the installation of a biomethanizer which will produce biogas from beet cuts and tails. Dried beet pulp will be produced, as well as molasses which makes it possible to produce bioethanol. At stake, nearly 300 direct jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs.
