Caremag: a strategic plant for the recycling of rare earths

The Minister for Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, has just inaugurated the Caremag site in Lacq (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), a future rare earth recycling and refining plant. With an investment of €216 million, this facility, which will open at the end of 2026, aims to reduce France's dependence on China in this key area. Caremag will recycle permanent magnets and refine mining concentrates, essential for the offshore wind, electric vehicle, and robotics sectors. By 2027, it will become the leading European recycler and the largest producer outside China of heavy rare earths, with the ambition of capturing 15% of the global market. This project will create 92 jobs and marks a major step forward for the energy transition and reindustrialization.
