59 - Saint-Gobain’s zero carbon flat glass, a world first
The Saint-Gobain Group becomes the first player in the world to produce 2,000 tons of zero-carbon flat glass. This technological feat was achieved in early May thanks to the use of 100% recycled glass (cullet) and 100% green energy, produced from biogas and carbon-free electricity. It was implemented for a week in Saint-Gobain's flat glass manufacturing plant in Aniche, in the North of France. By mobilizing the network of partners developed by Saint-Gobain, the emphasis was placed on circularity, with the use of 100% cullet from end-of-life glazing from renovation or demolition sites and from scrap production. The Group's industrial and research teams succeeded in adjusting all the technical parameters of the furnace to this dual challenge of a new operation with 100% recycled material and 100% biogas, while ensuring the good optical quality of the glass. . This achievement is a concrete manifestation of the commitment made by Saint-Gobain to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
