WHAT IS SAND/GREEN SAND FOUNDRY?

Sand casting is a technique for making metal parts by pouring molten material into a mold made up of sand, clay and catalysts. Molds are destroyed during production and are therefore not permanent.

Different stages of manufacturing a part in sand casting:

1. Production of model parts in steel, resin or wood
2. Realization of the upper and lower part of the sand mold
3. Sand hardening
4. Pouring molten metal into molds
5. Destruction of the mold to recover the metal part
6. Possible heat treatment of part
7. Finishing of parts (blasting, deburring, machining, treatment)

ADVANTAGES OF SAND FOUNDRY

• Fast manufacturing set-up compared to other foundry methods
• Can be used for almost all metals
• Reduced setup/tooling cost

DISADVANTAGES OF SAND FOUNDRY

• Risk of shrinkage
• Draft angle (low) present on the mold to be able to remove the model without damaging the model or the walls of the mold
• Limited in the complexity of the parts to be produced
