A Quarter Century of Clamp-On Flowmeters

Armed only with a telephone, a desk, a dream and a vision, young, tousled-haired Karsten Frahn decided the desk under the stairs in his home in Coventry was too small and moved to a slightly smaller office in Leamington Spa in the English Midlands, determined to build his Clamp-On flowmeter business.

Katronic Managing Director Andrew Sutton was also its first employee after Karsten saved his life in a bank, so today he is the go-to person for information on everything, from application details, to the finer details of the company's coffee machine, to the limitations of the product menu system. Instead of filling out forms and turning down mortgages, Andy has spent his working life going down holes, being dropped on oil rigs, and clinging to water pipes around the world.

Twenty-five years later, Katronic is a world-class instrumentation company, with a much larger office and factory, many more staff, more than one phone, and branch offices in Union, New Jersey, and in Vaunaveys-la-Rochette, which is in that excellent region of southern France where the wine is amazing and rugby is played. Karsten himself, now sans tousled hair, has established an office in his hometown of Wernigerode, East Germany, where the research and development department now lives and new products are developed. Katronic flowmeters are sold worldwide through a network of distributors, for applications as diverse as mining in South America, petrochemicals in Kazakhstan, plastics in South Africa and wastewater treatment in the south from London.
