13 – Carbon plans to create a Giga-factory of solar panels in Fos-sur-Mer
The Lyon start-up Carbon has plans to build what could become the largest European photovoltaic panel factory in Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône), on the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille. Total cost of the operation: 1.5 billion euros. Operational in 2025, the 60-hectare site will produce 5 gigawatts of photovoltaic cells and 3.5 gigawatts of modules. This gigantic project should lead to the creation of 3,000 direct jobs. For Pierre-Emmanuel Martin, co-founder of Carbon, "This plant will contribute to the reindustrialization of France and Europe", indeed only 3% of solar panels are manufactured on the European continent, while the Europe is the world's second largest market.
