SCHMERSAL

Tamper-proof security sensor RSS 16 with RFID technology

Description

The Schmersal group has launched the RSS 16, a new contactless safety sensor. The user of the AZ 16 electromechanical safety switches will probably recognize that the housing of the RSS 16 is of the same dimensions. In existing installations, the new RSS 16 safety sensor is therefore completely interchangeable with the AZ 16, which is considered the safety switch par excellence. Its installed base worldwide amounts to tens of millions of copies. Unlike the AZ 16, the RSS 16 does not have a mechanical actuator, but has an RFID contactless actuator with a secure communication protocol. Thanks to this technology, the RSS 16 user can choose between three types of actuator coding: with standard coding: the sensor accepts any actuator; with individual coding and unique learning: only the actuator paired with the sensor during the first commissioning can be used, or with individual coding and multiple learning: an unlimited number of actuators can be paired according to a specific procedure. Thus, the level of anti-fraud protection according to the new EN ISO 14119 standard can be adapted to the potential risks of circumvention of the security features of the application. Another advantage of the RSS 16: its 3 directions of actuation (front, side or rear) offer more flexibility in mechanical installation. In addition, the safety sensor can serve as a mechanical stop. The large connection chamber and its 4 cable gland outputs make it possible to carry out series wiring of the switches in an economical manner. As an alternative to the RSS 16, users wishing to keep the electromechanical safety switches while obtaining high anti-fraud protection, can switch to the AZ 16Z-I version with individual mechanical coding of the actuator.
