New safety light barrier with Bluetooth interface

The Schmersal Group is launching for the first time a safety light barrier with integrated Bluetooth interface. The SLC440/COM with Bluetooth BLE is an optoelectronic security system which, thanks to a Bluetooth interface, allows real-time consultation of all information concerning the status and service state diagnostics of the device from a smartphone or tablet. In addition, the Bluetooth interface allows easy commissioning from a smartphone or tablet using the integrated configuration wizard. Furthermore, the possibility of data logging is a practical function, which allows e.g. to use the data for documentation purposes for recurring checks or as part of preventive maintenance.

The transmission of data to smartphones or tablets (Android, iOS) is possible thanks to an application developed by Schmersal. BLE stands for Bluetooth Low Energy, a wireless system, short distances for the transmission of data with a secure protocol.

One-of-a-kind long reach
This innovative data transmission technology for optoelectronic safety systems is unique in its kind: until now, only diagnostic tools based on NFC technology were available on the market. While NFC tools only have a range of a few centimeters, that of the Bluetooth BLE interface is 100 times greater and reaches a maximum of 5 meters. The BLE interface is therefore particularly advantageous when the optoelectronic security system is installed in a location that is difficult to access. In addition, the Bluetooth BLE interface offers more possibilities of use, since most smartphones and tablets are equipped with Bluetooth, but not necessarily with NFC technology. As Bluetooth is an international industry standard, the 440/COM series of light barriers with Bluetooth BLE interface can be used worldwide.

Increased efficiency: status information is available in real time

Furthermore, this innovation is particularly economical; compared to traditional Bluetooth, BLE consumes significantly less energy and allows a reduction in costs, while maintaining an equally high communication range.
